Lyrics

Amarantha - Kevin Kelley (based on the short story by Wilbur Daniel Steele)

“Sweet Mary,” said her neighbors, “with kind condescension, “Such a simple and innocent child.”
“Come over here, Mare,” cried Ruby, with a sneer. “Come and give me a kiss ‘fore I go wild.”

“Amaranatha, Amarantha,” whispered wild-eyed Humble, “how beautiful with shoes you are.”
He only took her ‘bout a half a mile from her home but no one else ever took her so far.

She had oh! so many names that confused her so, was there something that each one signified?
Would she know who she was if she knew who she should be called? “If it’s my name, shouldn’t I decide?”
She was tired of carrying the burden of the names that everybody else bestowed upon her
Until a stranger came and called her by the name that as crazy as it was bestowed some honor

“Amaranatha, Amarantha,” whispered wild-eyed Humble, “how beautiful with shoes you are.”
He only took her ‘bout a half a mile from her home but no one else ever took her so far.

Everything was set, according to a script, she was told she was a girl who lived in danger.
And she needed the protection of her friends and family, even when it left her feeling caged.
The greatest risk of all was the unknown and unexpected, exposure to a foreign world or stranger.
But she still didn’t know how she ended up betrothed to a man with whom she never felt engaged.

So when madness came into her rigid ordered life, she lost connection of her feet upon the ground
Down was up and up was down, he gently held her and he danced her all around
His words confused her and stirred up her feelings, though she clearly knew that he was half insane
“Christ that my love were in my arms, and I in my bed again”

“Amaranatha, Amarantha,” sang wild-eyed Humble, “how beautiful with shoes you are.”
He only took her ‘bout a half a mile from her home but no one else ever took her so far.

The pattern of her life wouldn’t go so gently and justice brought Humble to his grave
But he gave her a window to discover that it wasn’t just ‘what is’ that she should save
So she cried, “go’way, go ‘way, go ’way, go ‘way, Lea me be, go ‘way”
As the sun set slowly over the hills she saw the dawning of a brand new day

“Amaranatha, Amarantha,” cried wild-eyed Humble, “how beautiful with shoes you are.”
He only took her ‘bout a half a mile from her home but no one else ever took her so far.
“Amaranatha, Amarantha,” cried wild-eyed Humble, “how beautiful with shoes you are.
How beautiful with shoes you are, Amarantha, how beautiful with shoes you are.”
“Amaranatha, Amarantha, Amarantha….
How beautiful with shoes you are, Amarantha, how beautiful with shoes you are.”
“Amaranatha, … ooooh … ooooooooh … oooooooh
How beautiful with shoes you are, Amarantha, how beautiful with shoes you are.
How beautiful with shoes you are,
How beautiful… with shoes….. you are, Amarantha
